Boundaries Arise from Love
We’ve all heard that you can’t really love another until you love yourself – and that you can’t truly love yourself until you love others. Rather than being contradictory, both reflect the truth in the spiritual adage, “As within, so without.”
Love opens us to something greater than ego. Ego tries to control, to acquire, to find a sense of safety in manipulating situations to its advantage. Love knows it is eternal, an expression of the universal energy that fuels all life. Love expresses truth that seeks to cooperate and co-create rather than control or manipulate. Where love is, fear dissipates. I can love another because I love myself; I can love myself because I love another. Love begets love.
When we desire to be in healthy, loving relationships, whether with an intimate partner, family member, or friend, we must interact from our true self – which includes knowing and honoring our boundaries. In my 25 years of counseling, this issue remains a big problem for many. What surprises some is that boundaries come from love and are an expression of truth – of how one truly feels and believes, followed by compassionate action to honor that truth.
Women in particular, with thousands of years of social programming to be “nice” at all costs, have found it difficult to know their truth, or to express it. Yet almost everyone can feel when boundaries are violated – it’s that sinking feeling in the stomach, or the nagging thought that something isn’t right, or the little voice inside that says, “I don’t want to do this but I will because I should.”
Let the word ‘should’ be an alarm – it means you are making a judgment, rather than knowing what you truly want and acting from that knowing. Judgment invariably comes from fear. Action taken in fear does not serve love, no matter how “nice” it seems. It isn’t loving to lie. Honoring truth, with kindness, always serves love.
Some of us no longer hear the little voice inside, having dismissed our truth for too long. Yet the uneasy feeling remains. Violating your truth is usually accompanied by a sense of helplessness, even hopelessness, which little can ease except rediscovering and then living what is true for you. That sometimes requires great love, of self and others.
As a graphic example, if my partner hits me and I decline to care for myself by staying in that situation, I’m not loving me, not respecting my own boundaries. I can expect that neither will others. I’m also not being loving toward my partner.
By staying and violating my own boundaries, I’m teaching that violence is acceptable, that unacceptable behavior is actually OK, and doing my partner a grave disservice by telling them this lie. Only by my staying can they continue to believe it is all right by me – which allows them to think that violence could indeed be acceptable.
When we know and kindly express clear boundaries, others typically treat us in ways we enjoy. When we don’t, they often treat us as we treat ourselves – with disrespect for who we truly are. As within, so without – a spiritual understanding made evident through the ability to love self and others enough to know and compassionately express inner truth – that is, to have good boundaries. May yours serve you well.

Letting Spring’s Exuberance Wake Us Up!
Spring is truly here, with daffodils blooming and robins busily pulling up early worms. All of nature begins a yearly cycle of outward growth after a time of inward focus. As part of nature, we also stretch and reach toward our next stage of development. Spring reminds us of the joyful wonder in simply being alive!

We experience that wonder every time we become present with the Divine Spark of Life living within and all around us. Expressed beautifully through flowers and embodied in all living things, it also resides powerfully in the human heart. Whenever we are willing to release what blocks this Divinity from awareness, we naturally begin manifesting our heart’s true desire. What does this mean during the course of a day, or the journey called life? Everything! Aligning personal will with the omnipresent, eternal, and Divine nature of life itself empowers us in many ways.
To be willing, not necessarily able but simply willing, begins the inner shift. We may not immediately see outward effects, yet experience it internally right away. To go from a state of uneasiness, of dis-ease, to even momentary ease and perhaps all the way to inspired action, opens us to moments of peace, to our potential for joy. Willingness to release whatever stands in the way, whatever blocks connection with and response to these beneficial states of consciousness, brings Spring into the moment – new life, fresh growth, warmth and beauty shaping all we see and touch.
Instead of remaining irritated by a comment or particular situation, we look for and thus discover the gifts they hold. Rather than resent an interruption or begrudge a difficult communication, we look for and thus see, through the fresh eyes of Spring, the potential for something new, attempting to take root. Having faith that the Divine Spark of Life lives within us, as well as in the daffodils, allows for new understandings, new behaviors, new happiness.
Spring calls for us to wake up! To take new steps on old issues that allow them, finally, to be released – that allow us to choose, more easily and consistently than ever before, a state of ease in this moment – and in this one – and this one – knowing that each experience creates the next. Your future is predicted by how you think and feel about yourself and life, RIGHT NOW.
Spring is the time to change the path you’re on if it hasn’t taken you where you desire to be. Oh yes, you may say, I truly want that, but how? How do I embrace happiness and faith and live more fully within the Divinity that Nature expresses in each flower? Thankfully the answers are many and most are simple: perhaps not always easy to begin yet like a seed, once planted, they grow with even a minimum of water and light.
So use this natural cycle, this burgeoning energy of Spring, to sow the seeds of your own happiness, your own cycle of giving forth and receiving the exuberance of life. Willingness is all that’s required – willingness to do and be whatever is necessary to release what has blocked forward movement and open to what inspires you. Human growth is rarely about gaining anything, but about recognizing and releasing internal obstacles to our very natural flowering.
So let us blossom, individually and collectively, into the people and the world that our hearts desire us to be. Spring offers much inspiration for the journey.
